After walking by a huge bag of fresh cranberries for only $2.99 at Costco this year, I decided it was time to do something I have never done before and attempt to make cranberry sauce myself for Thanksgiving.  It was a life changing experience because I can honestly tell you that not only was it a thousand times better than anything I’ve ever eaten out of the can, it was cheaper too!   So here is how I made it for all of you that want to have a go at it this holiday season!

  • 4 cups of fresh cranberries, washed
  • 2 cups of sugar
  • 1/3 cup of water
  • 1/4 tsp of ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp of ground allspice
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • The juice of one orange
  • Zest of 1/2 of a medium sized orange

  1. In a medium size saucepan over medium heat, dissolve the sugar in the water.
  2. Stir in the cranberries, cinnamon, allspice & nutmeg and cook until the cranberries begin to burst (between 5-10 minutes).
  3. Stir in the orange juice & zest.
  4. The cranberry sauce will thicken as it cools.

There are all kinds of great ways you can alter this recipe including adding apples, pears, maybe even some chopped walnuts.
